Energy Production & Distribution Technology

Power Up for an In-Demand Career

In this program, you'll study the technical fundamentals necessary for a career in the energy industry, with particular attention focused on utility-scale turbine repair and maintenance.

You'll apply classroom concepts by regularly climbing and maintaining the 2.5 megawatt wind turbine located on our campus. Its four generators, hub, gearbox, nacelle, and other parts will give you valuable hands-on experience with these major compenents.

Kirkwood is the affordable option! We offer more than $3 million in scholarships every year. 

Students in this program may be eligible to have half their tuition paid for by the Kibbie Grant.

Graduates of the Energy Production and Distribution program will be able to:

  • Read and interpret an electrical schematic
  • Read and interpret a hydraulic schematic
  • Demonstrate ability to perform Lock Out/Tag Out (LOTO) to make equipment safe for maintenance
  • Use a multimeter to measure characteristics of AC and DC electrical circuits
  • Perform wire maintenance tasks in accordance with applicable procedures
  • Use torque/tensioning equipment to secure hardware to the proper specification
  • Perform tasks using hand and power tools in accordance with applicable procedures
  • Design and build an operational photovoltaic system
  • Demonstrate proficiency with fall protection/fall arrest equipment

A one-hour program conference is required prior to acceptance to the program. You'll learn more about the program, specific admissions requirements and have the opportunity to have questions answered by program faculty and staff.
