All About Scholarships

Some, but not all are! Other requirements that are frequently considered for scholarships include: financial need, residency, leadership, program or area of study, and scholarship-specific requirements.

No! You'll need only one application even if you qualify for more than one scholarship, unless the specific scholarship criterion states otherwise.

Every attempt will be made to match available scholarships to your specific situation based on the detailed information you provide in your application.

For the majority of scholarships, recipient selection is usually completed by August.

Departmental committees award selected scholarships. These departmental awards may not follow the same timeline for the award selection process. Because of this, some scholarships are not awarded until a later date.

Note: Since applications can be reviewed at multiple times throughout the school year, you will not be notified if you are not selected as a recipient.

You can expect to be notified by mail and your Kirkwood email if you are selected to receive a scholarship.

A scholarship committee composed of Kirkwood faculty and staff, representing multiple areas of the college, screens the applications. The committee meets in April to make recommendations based on donor criterion.

Most scholarship awards begin in the fall semester immediately following your notification and acceptance of the award(s) and will also be available in the spring of the following year.

Once the current academic year is over, your scholarship funding will end.

Kirkwood's scholarship application period for the next academic year begins October 1.

Scholarships can come from a wide variety of sources. You can inquire about private scholarships with your high school counselor, employer, church and/or local civic organizations.

Keep in mind: You should never pay money to complete a scholarship application.

Please have the check mailed to:

Have the donor reference your k-number if possible. If your scholarship requires that you send an enrollment verification form or a transcript of your previous semester's Kirkwood grades, please contact the OneStop office at 319-398-7600.

Scholarship Deadlines

  • The application period for scholarship awards opens October 1, and the scholarship application is available online. Remember: To be considered for scholarships, you must have a current Kirkwood application for admission on file.
  • Your application materials must be submitted to the Scholarship office by March 15 in order to be considered for first-round funding opportunities.
  • Applications received after the deadline will be eligible for a limited amount of second-round funding opportunities and new scholarships developed after the March 15 deadline. Applications for second-round opportunities are due July 15.
  • If scholarship opportunities need to be reopened (if a recipient elects not to attend Kirkwood and declines an opportunity), all eligible applicants at that time will be considered for second-round and/or subsequent awards. This includes any new scholarships established throughout the course of the current school year. Current-year scholarship applicants who meet the criteria of a new scholarship opportunity will be considered for that award.

“It's hard to beat the price. Kirkwood was the most affordable college option I could find and it's also easy to meet new people and connect with new friends.”
